Devon holiday cottages take on a whole new meaning when you book your holiday accommodation at Hemyock Castle. This castle with the rich history involving the parliament against King Charles I and then the restoration of King Charles II was in use from approximately 1380 until the 1660’s.

As it was partly demolished after the restoration of King Charles II, there are only significant remnants of the buildings in the castle’s environments left. Some of these buildings have been converted into self-catering holiday cottages for the holiday-maker with a taste for history.

Each holiday cottage has its own name which lavishly contributes to its already ample charm. The names of the cottages reflect the history of the castle: Lady Margaret and Sir William (the two guard houses), Oliver’s Bay (a private apartment) and Mow Barton (a converted stable block).

Situated in the beautiful Mid-Devon, the castle is ideally suited for tours to Dartmoor, Exmoor and Devon itself. These locations offer extensive sights and even have a number of year-round tourist attractions that will keep the whole family entertained.

Back at the castle, there are several shops and other entertainment opportunities that will help visitors to truly appreciate the significance of the castle and its surroundings. Walking amongst the ruins you can also appreciate the kind of lives the medieval inhabitants of the castle would have lived, as well as the pomp and splendour of King Charles II’s reign.

To round off your holiday, stretch your wings and visit the nearby National Park that will offer not only entertainment, but also an assortment of valuable information.

Take out your camera, bring the family and create some historical moments of your own.
